Skin sagging or fat deposits? The difference between the two operations, when they are combined and candidate criteria.
For many people troubled by the abdomen the most common question is 'liposuction or tummy tuck?' The two operations solve different problems: liposuction deals with fat, while tummy tuck deals with excess skin and loosened muscles. The right choice starts with diagnosing the real problem.
What is the difference?
Topic
Description

Incision: Liposuction
Small 3–5 mm incisions
Incision: Tummy tuck
Horizontal lower-abdominal incision and around the navel
Recovery: Liposuction
Garment 4–6 weeks, back to work in 3–7 days
Recovery: Tummy tuck
Drain 5–7 days, back to work in 2–3 weeks
Which in which situation?
Skin is firm, there are fat deposits: liposuction alone may be enough.
Skin is loose, abdominal muscles separated, stretch marks present: tummy tuck is needed; liposuction does not tighten skin.
Both excess fat and loose skin: a tummy tuck + liposuction combination can be performed.
Target weight not reached (BMI over 30): weight loss first is advised.
Why does body mass index matter?
In both operations safety is closely related to BMI. At our clinic a BMI under 30 is advised for liposuction and tummy tuck; borderline patients are planned with surgeon assessment. With the BMI and surgery suitability calculator on our site you can see your own value.
Pregnancy plans
If you plan a pregnancy later it is better to wait for a tummy tuck, because a new pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall again. Liposuction, being regional, can be planned before pregnancy as well, but weight changes affect the result.
Mommy makeover
Correcting post-birth changes in the abdomen and breasts in one session is called a 'mommy makeover'. It can last up to five to six hours and, because the overall load increases, strict patient selection is needed. The number of procedures in one session is limited according to the surgeon's and anaesthetist's safety assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Does fat come back after liposuction? The fat cells removed do not return, but remaining cells can grow with weight gain, so stable weight matters.
Do stretch marks go with a tummy tuck? Marks on the skin removed (below the navel) disappear; those above the navel may remain.
How visible is the scar? The incision is planned at underwear level; the scar fades markedly over 12 months, and care and sun protection matter.
