The First Six Weeks After Aesthetic Surgery: Recovery Timeline and Care Tips

A week-by-week guide to swelling, bruising, stitches, garments and return to activity; when to contact the doctor.

The result of aesthetic surgery is shaped not only on the operating table but during recovery. The first six weeks are the critical period when the body closes wounds and most swelling subsides. The timeline below offers a general roadmap for many body and facial operations; the exact timeline is set by your surgeon's instructions.

Week 1: rest and monitoring

  • Take the prescribed medication on time; pain should be controlled with painkillers.
  • Walk gently; staying bedbound raises thrombosis risk.
  • Leave dressing and drain care to the surgeon's team; do not intervene yourself.
  • Take plenty of fluids and protein; avoid alcohol and smoking.

Weeks 2–3: return to social life

Bruises turn yellow and begin to fade; stitches are mostly removed in this period. Returning to light work is possible but heavy lifting and intense sport should be avoided. Swelling may increase during the day and ease in the morning; this is normal.

Weeks 4–6: gradual return to activity

Wearing the garment or support bra continues. With the surgeon's approval light cardio exercise may begin. Silicone gel or tape is recommended for scars; sun protection prevents the scars from darkening.

When to contact the doctor immediately

  • Fever above 38.5 °C or chills and shivering
  • Increasing one-sided swelling or hardness not relieved by painkillers
  • Foul-smelling discharge from the wound, spreading redness
  • Pain, swelling and redness in the calf; shortness of breath or chest pain (go to an emergency department)

Our clinic's patients are supported after surgery with a 24-hour WhatsApp line and scheduled photo check-ups. Do not dismiss any symptom as 'exaggeration'; early action easily resolves most complications.

Nutrition and supportive care

The most important things that support healing are enough protein (1–1.2 g per kilo), vitamins C and D, plenty of fluids and regular sleep. Salty foods can increase swelling and should be limited in the first weeks. Do not use vitamin supplements or herbal teas unless the doctor advises; some increase bleeding.

The emotional side

In the first weeks after surgery it is very common to feel the result 'looks bad' because of swelling; for most patients this feeling passes by week three or four. Do not compare yourself to others or to the simulation straight away. If your worries persist, do not hesitate to talk to your coordinator or surgeon.

In summary

Recovery after aesthetic surgery is a matter of patience and routine: take medication on time, move gently, keep the garment and instructions, and call your surgeon immediately at warning signs. The final result settles in 6–12 months.
